DRBD and LINSTOR Repository and Software Updates Access

The greatness of open source is its flexibility. You can still do everything on your own but with some convenient features from us to make your journey easier. We are now introducing LINBIT Starter, our first entry subscription to access LINBIT customer repository packages and DRBD updates to jumpstart your business.

LINSTOR® is an open source software-defined storage (SDS) system that brings management convenience, scalability, and automation to block storage in your deployments.

It manages storage layers, such as LVM and ZFS, and uses DRBD data replication to facilitate high availability and disaster recovery for your critical applications and services.

You can use LINSTOR on its own or through integrations with the many orchestration, virtualization, or cloud platforms that it is compatible with, such as Kubernetes, Proxmox VE, OpenNebula, CloudStack, and others.

A LINSTOR cluster has separate management and data planes so system or LINSTOR maintenance does not mean downtime to your users.

All communication between LINSTOR components happens over TCP/IP network connections, which can be secured by FIPS-compliant algorithms.

DRBD® is open source distributed replicated block storage software for the Linux platform. It is implemented as a kernel driver, several user space management applications, and some shell scripts.

DRBD is traditionally used in high availability (HA) computer clusters, but beginning with DRBD version 9, it can also be used to create larger software-defined storage pools with a focus on cloud integration.

For over two decades, DRBD has been actively developed and regularly updated. These updates not only include bug fixes and performance improvements, but also new features.

Due to its focus on performance and ability to keep pace with applications that have frequent small write operations, DRBD is often found backing HA databases and messaging queues.

LINBIT has ported its Linux based high availability (HA) stack to the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems (Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022, Windows 10 and 11). This stack consists of following open source components:

  • WinDRBD: A native Windows kernel driver based on DRBD that provides highly available (HA) virtual disks to applications and file systems
  • LINSTOR For Windows: A software-defined storage (SDS) solution for managing DRBD and WinDRBD resources
  • LINBIT Cluster Manager for Windows: A light-weight application aware cluster manager based on DRBD Reactor that comes preconfigured for common server applications such as MS SQL Server, Hyper-V and SMB file servers

get access to

DRBD or LINSTOR Repository Packages

Don’t waste time searching through public repositories or building the latest DRBD or LINSTOR packages and utilities from GitHub source code. LINBIT Starter grants you access to LINBIT’s officially signed and certified package repositories.

Keep your system up-to-date without wasting time compiling or packaging matching kernel modules. With the LINBIT Starter Package, installing DRBD or LINSTOR updates is as simple as entering a package manager update and upgrade command.

Knowledge Base Access

The knowledge base is designed to give Linux IT administrators the basic understanding of high availability (HA) and software-defined storage (SDS) setups using DRBD. Prerequisites for this include the ability to use Bash and familiarity with basic Linux commands.

Community Support

The main difference between LINBIT HA and LINBIT Starter is the level of support. LINBIT Starter provides cost-effective community support from LINBIT’s Discourse tech community – monitored by our developers. If you later decide you want our developers’ full attention 24/7, you can upgrade to LINBIT HA anytime.
