Fraudsters & Technology

AI technologies are changing our world quickly. Of course, fraudsters also adopt these technologies and create increasingly sophisticated CFO scams. Recently, my CFO shared an email he received, supposedly from me, that showed a convincing conversation I supposedly had with a third party, concluding that my CFO should initiate a wire transfer. This time, it was easily detected by him, as my note to him would have been in German, whereas the fraudsters wrote the email in English. However, I am sure they will close this gap soon and refine their AI prompts to accommodate that detail as well.

After a bit, I remembered the PGP/GPG technology. I used it back then, 20-25 years ago, because it was cool. These days, I created a new GPG key using the currently considered secure algorithm and had my CFO trained on using GPG. From now on, such sensitive emails will be at a minimum signed, if not encrypted, leaving no chance for more sophisticated AI scam attacks.

In my previous newsletter, I mentioned having a conversation with Doug Milburn, CEO of 45drives. I am happy to now share that we have officially partnered with 45 Drives to deliver enterprise-ready HA open storage solutions, combining open hardware with proven software-defined storage.

I also previously shared some updates we’ve made to some of our Proxmox content. That work has continued, and I can now share ‘How to Set Up LINSTOR on Proxmox VE,’ ‘Setting Up Highly Available Storage for Proxmox Using LINSTOR & the LINBIT GUI,’ and ‘Implementing Disaster Recovery for Proxmox VE with a Stretched LINSTOR Cluster.’

These articles continue our efforts in assisting users who could benefit from using LINSTOR with Proxmox VE, the advantages of which include:

  • Extremely fast live migrations of virtual machines (VMs) and containers.
  • Highly available VMs and containers, ultimately mitigating virtual host failures.
  • Virtual disk replicas on two or more nodes.
  • A configurable and automatically maintained number of data replicas, for example, three replicas of a virtual disk in a 5-node cluster.

Regarding software updates, Linstor 1.32 was recently released. The most important change is an optimization for larger deployments. The Linstor-satellite restart time (with already configured DRBD resources) has been improved by a factor of 10.
