As we designed DRBD for applications with demanding I/O requirements, it is a perfect fit for databases. So it is not surprising that a global hyperscaler combined WinDRBD and Microsoft’s SQL Server Web edition to create one of its managed database offerings. Of course, we at LINBIT are proud of being a building block of that product.
The obvious business rationale for combining winDBRD and SQL Server Web Edition is that it enables the user to achieve high availability at a lower cost for the edition of the database engine that does not include high availability from the DB engine vendor. In the end, this method avoids the high upsell price for the DB engine’s HA feature while still providing the full SQL feature set in the more affordable product. Replacing that HA upsell price with LINBIT’s HA is more cost-efficient. This is a play that works for the database products from all major database vendors. We released a blog post titled ‘Reducing DRBD Memory Requirements’ that highlights the strong compatibility between our software and databases.
Recently, I attended and presented at the CloudStack Conference in Milan. As so many times before, I enjoyed reconnecting with that community of cloud builders. Conversations at such conferences are always an integral source of input for the development roadmap. My takeaway this time is to focus on the multi-data-center aspects we need to cover with DRBD and LINSTOR.
In other news, we have launched a Kubernetes Newsletter that will serve as a round-up of all new Kubernetes content created at LINBIT, and will also include relevant software updates and industry news, such as events. You can read the newsletter on LinkedIn, where it was first published, or on the LINBIT blog, where it will be published soon after. We expect a new edition every 4-6 weeks.
I can also let you know that we have updated two posts: ‘Comparing Open Source Virtualization Platforms’ on the LINBIT blog, and ‘LINSTOR Quorum Policies and Virtualization Environments’ on the LINBIT Knowledge Base. These updates keep the information current, ensuring that our content remains useful to any readers.
Regarding software updates, we have released drbd-9.3.0, LINSTOR GUI v2.0.0, LINSTOR Operator 2.10.2, and WinDRBD 1.2.6 since I last wrote.
