Open Source Workload Orchestrators

LINBIT® SDS is available for Kubernetes (and OpenShift), Apache CloudStack, Open Stack, OpenNebula, XCP-ng, and Proxmox. When I think of a name for these, I always return to ‘Open source workload orchestrators.’

So far, there is one name missing from that list: oVirt. oVirt is the Open Source upstream for Oracle Virtualization Manager and Red Hat Virtualization. Keep in mind that the latter gets replaced by KubeVirt, and support of the oVirt-based product will end in 2024.

Last week my developers presented LINBIT SDS backing an oVirt cluster running in the lab! At this stage it’s an early internal demonstration, but it’s still showing impressively quick progress. Within the next month or two, we will add oVirt to the list of Open Source workload orchestrators supported by LINBIT SDS.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to bring to your attention an interview conducted by Michael Tunnell at SCaLE 20x. Brendan and Ryan from LINBIT talk through their experience at SCaLE and provide an overview of our offerings and capabilities. Watch the interview here.

The other intriguing presentation was a drbd-reactor on Windows, switching a service (virtual) IP address between Windows servers. Also, lab status at the moment. However, it should become available to regular customers in Q2 2023.

Also worth mentioning is a Technical Report by Matt Kereczman, about the performance results of LINBIT SDS with Kubernetes on a cluster of ARM64 machines from Ampere. In essence, by using LINBIT SDS, they broke our previous IOPS record again. While the previous record was on a cluster of 12 machines, the new one was achieved on a cluster of three (3!) servers. 25.5M is the new IOPS number.

After SCaLE, and CloudFest, the next chances to meet us are the CloudStack European User Group meeting on May 4, OpenNebula Con 2023 from May 23-25, and Red Hat Summit from May 23-25.

Since I last wrote, the team has shared the following minor software updates: LINSTOR-1.21linstor-gateway-1.2drbd-reactor-1.0.1drbd-utils-9.23.1LINSTOR operator-2.0.1.
